Being a CIT can be very fun and rewarding, but it is a serious time commitment and a lot of responsibility. Please review this volunteer description and expectations with a parent to make sure you are comfortable committing to these guidelines.

As a Counselor-in-Training volunteer you will get to:

  • Learn and practice leadership skills as part of a fun, talented and dedicated staff
  • Learn new skills relating to animals, agriculture, cooking, education, and being a role model for children
  • Gain work-related experience while earning community service hours, if needed

As a Counselor-in-Training volunteer, it will be your responsibility to:

Come to camp each day prepared to work. CITs are expected to work from 8:45am-3:30pm everyday during the entire week of camp for which they have committed.  CITs come to camp with a positive attitude, a water bottle and a lunch. CITs are required to wear appropriate clothing (including name tag) and close-toed shoes every day.

Work with Junior and Senior Counselors to provide a safe, fun, and positive environment for campers. CITs follow the directions of Junior and Senior Counselors to provide support during camp activities for the same group of campers all week.  CITs work with Counselors to identify potential hazards or campers in need of extra help. CITs may be asked to set up an activity, clean up an activity, or wash dishes.  CITs may not use cell phones during camp, except in emergencies and out of sight from campers.

Model appropriate behavior as an example for campers. CITs go out of their way to make all campers feel welcome through eye contact, body language, and encouragement.  CITs enthusiastically participate in all camp activities, including chores, games, songs and crafts, while playing at the level of the campers and clearly demonstrating respect for people, tools, and animals.  CITs encourage campers to try new things and cheer them on.

Provide leadership, structure and organization. CITs will plan and lead their group in at least one activity, game, chore or craft each week.  CITs assist with all other aspects of camp including camper arrival/departure, daily chores, set-up/clean-up, and assisting others in their activities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Counselors-in-Training must be at least 14 years old (required)
  • Previous experience with children, animals or summer camp is strongly preferred
  • Ability to work as a member of a team, demonstrating communication, creativity and flexibility
  • Interest in gardening, agriculture, education, cooking, or sustainability, and skills such as singing or arts and crafts are encouraged
